Overwhelmed and frustrated with marketing advice that
seems to work better for others than it does for you?
Socially shy, or energetically introverted and feeling unable
to force yourself to networking meetings, or to
solicit referrals from doctors offices?
Struggling to make a decent living from your therapy practice
and afraid you may have to quit?
Current marketing not paying off?
Desperate to know what will?

Chances are you were taught little to nothing in graduate school about getting clients. And maybe you've spent years in agencies where you don't have to worry about marketing yourself in order to do your work.
Or, perhaps you've had an excellent supervisor who built his referral network and got paneled with insurance companies 20-30 years ago, who isn't savvy to promoting his practice to gain cash-paying clients on the internet, or he's out of touch with the realities of 21st century, internet-based marketing methods.
And worse, if you're like me and hundreds of our colleagues, you're not really comfortable with being in "sales" mode, trying to persuade people to become your clients.
That pretty much leaves you desperate for answers to your most pressing question -- how can you get known in your community as a great therapist?
What if I told you -- that's the wrong question!
Yep, no kidding, worrying about "getting known"
will take your efforts off track
So you've probably asked other therapists what works for them, right?
You've made brochures and business cards, and probably made a website that explains all about what counseling with you is like and the many diagnoses you can treat. It's pretty, but it's not bringing in many clients.
Maybe you've written letters of introduction to doctors, hoping for referrals. Or sent postcards, or even business card magnets for their filing cabinets. Or taken them boxes of brownies with your business card on top of each neatly plastic wrapped portion. And only a couple short term clients have resulted.
Others are doing "signature talks", and making the rounds of business networking "leads" groups ...which make you cringe... but you join a business alliance hoping to meet people who will be interested in your services. When they ask what you do, and you tell them you're a psychotherapist, they ask -- oh, so you do psychic readings ??!
Been there, tried all that,
wasted lots of time and money....
and, yes! someone really asked me that!
Take an inventory of all your marketing activities
~ is your marketing message emotionally compelling?
~ what else do you already have in place?
~ how well are these activities working for you?
~ what have you created that now works for you, without you?
~ what do you know you need to do, but aren't sure how?
I urge my clients to get your foundations in place -- especially that compelling core message, sticky website and one email-delivered, list-building give away -- before attempting any other marketing activity.
Decide what activities fit your personality, ethics, and energy
~ what marketing activities are fun for you to do weekly?
~ which action tasks are easy to do daily?
~ what boundaries do you want to hold in your marketing?
~ rule out anything that doesn't energize your spirit
After these considerations, pick ONE main marketing project. Detail all the steps involved, including evaluating success and making adjustments. Then work that one marketing project and nothing else until a reasonable amount of time can show it works, or doesn't.
You're right. Those two self-assessments aren't enough. They are just the important starting point.
And what really helps the shy or introverted counselor, in my personal experience and in what I've seen work for my clients, is this:
The best advice
I ever got
about marketing
my private practice
Don't promote just the benefits of your services.
Provide authentic helpfulness with problem solving ideas at the right time, for the right people.
Doing that multiple times, in different ways, positions you in your marketplace as a memorable and valuable resource your ideal clients will remember when they are ready for what you offer.

Get your marketing message into strong, specific, emotionally compelling language that you can repeat with confidence in writing and under any social pressure.
Scour your business behavior habits for all signs of self-sabotage, and stop giving yourself excuses for why you aren't following through on your business building plan
Create and diligently work a coherent marketing action plan that maximizes your talents and really connects with your desired ideal clients.
Devise problem-solving products -- ezines, blogs, special reports, tip sheets, self-scoring quizzes, ebooks, PowerPoint slide shows, audio recordings, tele-classes -- to establish VALUE (not just knowledge) credibility and rapport with potential clients.
Maintain your focus by being clear about what fits your personality, your ethics, and your energy -- resist temptation to do everything that works for anyone else unless it is authentically You. You won't go wrong by maximizing your own true talents.

You get clear, specific instructions that give you immediate help on the key foundations of marketing a cash-based counseling practice -- in terminology that makes sense to the clinical mind!
